All eyes on the autumn sales [2009年10月05日]

The first September sales have produced lacklustre results. In a climate of serious prudency – with no room for over-bidding or risk-taking – only the safest bet on the contemporary market (Andy Warhol) has lived up to expectations. However, one exception to the market’s general gloom has been the thirty year-old Indian artist Jitish Kallah.

From Phillips to Phillips de Pury & Co. [2009年09月21日]

Phillips de Pury & Co.’s inclination towards contemporary art, photography and design perfectly demonstrates the mutations of the art market during the last decade. The auction house experienced the exhilaration of the surge in prices and the violent contraction of the market… no matter what, Phillips de Pury & Co will stick with ultra contemporary art.

London sales: second round [2009年06月22日]

On 23 June, Christie’s will be offering 45 Impressionist & Modern works in London and the following day Sotheby’s will present just 27 pieces. The catalogues feature works by Picasso, Claude Monet and Giacometti. On 25 and 30 June, the two auctioneers will open their Contemporary Art sales

Affordable art: a diversified market [2009年05月18日]

For 10 years now a special “roaming” art fair has been dedicated to affordable art contributing to dispelling the notion that art is elitist and beyond the budgets of the masses. From 4 to 7 June 2009, the Affordable Art Fair is returning to Paris, at the Espace Champerret, having already visited London, Sydney, Amsterdam, New York and Brussels. Young collectors and informed non-professionals seeking new talents can discover more than 600 artists at prices ranging from 100 to 5,000 euros.

Contemporary drawing prices [2009年03月22日]

Demand for contemporary drawings started to accelerate in New York at the beginning of this decade before spreading to other cultural capitals. In 2002, the MOMA put on a show entitled Drawing Now: Eight Propositions, a large exhibition bringing together 300 contemporary drawings by 26 prominent European, Asian and American artists including David THORPE, Paul NOBLE, Toba KHEDOORI, Kara WALKER, Yoshitomo NARA, Elizabeth PEYTON, Ugo RONDINONE and Chris OFILI.

Artprice’s TOP 10 ranking: the art market heavyweights in 2008 [2009年03月15日]

Every year Artprice publishes its ranking of artists based on auction revenue. At the end of 2007 the figures were remarkable: the market’s Top 10 had generated a combined total of $1.8bn, up no less than 50% on the previous year’s total. In 2008 the total was $100m lower than for 2007 at $1.7bn, a figure representing 20% of the total global art auction market on 1.5% of its transactions.

The Middle Eastern market – Sotheby’s arrives in Doha [2009年02月22日]

In August 2008, the Art Market Insight published an overview of the boom in Iranian art. The United Arab Emirates, the new eldorado of cultural tourism, is building its Louvre in Abu Dhabi and its Guggenheim in Dubai, the city that has established itself, in two years, as the new capital of the Middle Eastern art market. In 2008, auction revenues in Dubai amounted to USD 34.9 million, a +70% increase on 2007.

Damien Hirst – Caught in the avalanche [2009年01月04日]

The Damien HIRST sale at Sotheby’s on 15 and 16 September last was a brilliant and unprecedented event in the history of public auctions.<%/DESC%>Two days of frenzied bidding for 218 of Hirst’s new works generated no less than GBP 111.4 million and a new artist’s record when his Golden Calf fetched £ 9.2 million, thereby literally becoming the “worshipped icon” (golden calf) of the art adored by wealthy and fashionable collectors.

Contemporary art loses its shine [2008年11月17日]

The market for contemporary art, the most speculative segment of the art market (+108% since 2003), has not withstood the shocks of the current financial turmoil. The results of the prestigious November sales in New York organised by Sotheby’s and Christie’s on 11 and 12 November are most discouraging.

Damien Hirst / Jeff Koons – Artists and managers [2008年09月22日]

The two most well-known and expensive contemporary artists alive today have other talents in common. They both enjoy exceptionally high media profiles, both elicit controversy, both set their respective auction records in 2008… and both know how to communicate. They also both seem to be “financially aware”.September 2008 sees both on centre stage with just five days between the two. The American Jeff Koons, the most expensive living artist at auction today, is currently rubbing shoulders with French royal history having inaugurated his exhibition at the Palace of Versailles (10/09/2008 to 14/12/2008) while the English artist Damien Hirst has caused a mini sensation by selling directly through Sotheby’s…

Damien Hirst, star of the September sales! [2008年08月24日]

Discovered by the advertising magnate and collector Charles Saatchi, the leading icon of the British scene knows the market rules off by heart. He is a strategist in art marketing and is getting himself talked about again by organising an exclusive sale at Sotheby’s.

Contemporary sculpture in excellent shape [2008年06月15日]

In the contemporary art field, sculpture, and particularly the offshoot known as ‘installations’, is currently enjoying a high level of market interest. At the top end, collectors are now paying tens of millions of dollars for monumental works by the likes of Koons, Hirst and Murakami. Artprice takes a look at this high profile segment of the market occupied by young artists, all born after 1945.In less than a year, the number of 7-figure (sometimes 8 …) auction sales involving three dimensional works has substantially increased. In 2007, 14 works sold for over a million dollars; in the first six months of 2008, we are already at 18…

Contemporary drawing [2008年03月17日]

In France, contemporary drawing is now exhibited widely, having shrugged off its image as a secondary medium. Its new standing is due, in particular, to the establishment of a Drawing Prize by the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Foundation, the creation of the “Paris Capital of Drawing” label by the Contemporary Drawing Fair which is celebrating its tenth anniversary between the 10 and 14 April and the birth of Slick drawing which takes place on the same dates. However, the auction houses are not profiting from the buzz generated by these events to give more space to contemporary drawings in their sales, with no specialist sale being held in France.

Auctions in February 2008: the new rhythm of contemporary art [2008年01月29日]

The following day, Sotheby’s outstripped its competitor, selling 66 lots for a total of £72,427,600. In 2006, the total London proceeds of the two auction houses’ contemporary art evening sales amounted to close to £56 million.

Christie’s confirms its leading position in contemporary art [2007年05月21日]

The thrill of the New York contemporary art auctions is no longer the thousand dollar sale but those achieving millions of dollars. At the height of the May sales, a work by Mark ROTHKO went for 65 million dollars, becoming the most expensive post-war work in the market. These days the Sotheby’s and Christie’s contemporary art auctions are raising proceeds in excess of those on “Impressionist & Modern Art”. In 138 lots, the 15 and 16 May sales generated, all costs included, 639,528,400 million dollars, compared with 515,012,000 million dollars on 123 lots the previous week in the “Impressionist & Modern Art” sales.

The contemporary drawing market [2007年03月08日]

Paris traditionally welcomes the Drawings Fair in March. This year, for the 19th event, 31 galleries presented more than 1000 papers from the Renaissance up to the 1970s in the Palais de la Bourse; there was a notable absence of more recent work because, for the first time, the Contemporary Drawings Fair took place March 22-26: forty or so French and foreign galleries took over a six-storey building on Avenue d’Iena for a show entirely dedicated to contemporary drawings.

This month the European art market will gyrate to the rhythm of the contemporary art fairs, with the Frieze Art Fair starting 12 October in London and then the Paris FIAC on 26 October and Art Cologne on 1 November. At the same time, the auction houses will capitalise on these events by organising major concurrent sales of contemporary art. Before the fall season begins, Artprice here provides a brief overview of the ebullient contemporary art market so far this year.

To this end, Artprice has identified the contemporary artist (born after 1940) who has generated the highest revenue at auction in each of the world’s principal art markets.

The rising stars at auction : latest trends [2004年06月03日]

Artprice surveys the rising stars of a generation of artists that are as likely to send a frisson through the auction rooms as Picasso, Renoir or Van Gogh. Sometimes now topping a million dollars, the prices commanded by young generations of artists, have recently begun to rival those of established auction stars —”young” in our classification means born after 1960.

YBA 2003: are the Young British Artists still creating a sensation in the auction rooms? [2004年04月04日]

When Damien HIRST curated the Young British Artists’ first group exhibition, “Freeze”, in London back in 1988, his own work, along with that of Gary HUME, Sarah LUCAS and Fiona RAE, had little market value. At the time, the Young British Artists’ reputation was confined to an inner circle of the London art scene. However, with the group’s main mentors—gallery owner (and advertising mogul) Charles Saatchi, and Jay Jopling, founder of the White Cube Gallery—spreading the faith, global recognition was swift to come.

International contemporary art driven by Phillips, De Pury & Luxembourg [2003年11月23日]

The contemporary art market has been doing fairly well of late, and the last big auctions of the year have reaffirmed the trend. The wealthiest US investors are continuing to support new art. Record after record has been falling in New York, and not only for American artists.
