评论: One of the leading expatriate genre and figure painters, Bacon was particularly well-known for his watercolors. He also helped popularize, through his illustrations, the interesting perspective of scenes on the decks of passenger ships. In 1857, at age 18, Bacon enlisted in the U.S. Army. During the Civil War he also served as field artist for Leslie's Weekly but was seriously wounded. In 1864, after recovering, he went to Paris to study art and remained in Europe for the rest of his life. During the mid 1890s, his interest began to shift from his figurative and genre works in oils to watercolors of his travels, as he and his second wife Louisa Lee Bacon began to travel frequently through Egypt, Greece, Sicily, Ceylon, and Italy. During these years, Bacon gained high acclaim for his watercolors of Normandy and Egypt. Author: Parisian Art and Artists (Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883).
