评论: Active in Boston by 1848; traveled back and forth between Boston and Newport 1853-57. By the mid 1850s he was drawing ships as well as views of Newport and other towns in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. His lithographic views of Newport (where he lived) and Narragansett Bay brought him continuous success through the early 1880s. During the 1870s, he also began getting commissions from rich Newport residents to draw their mansions. Throughout his career in the U.S., Newell worked independently (sometimes publishing his own prints) while also drawing views for John H. Bufford (into the 1870's); Endicott & Company; and Robertson, Seibert & Shearman. He moved to England in 1882 where he continued to make lithographs and also worked as art critic for many newspapers.
