评论: Brought to America at the age of nine; grew up in NYC. In 1835 he was apprenticed to the lithographer, George Endicott, where he mastered the medium. During 1854-62, he produced most of Endicott"s marine lithos, as well as thirty for Currier & Ives. In 1863, he became the head art director for Harper"s, and he held that position until his retirement in 1889. At Harper"s, he assembled one of the most talented teams of illustrators in publishing history, including Winslow Homer, E. A. Abbey, C.S. Reinhart, H. Pyle; M.J. Burns, and many others. While at Harper"s, he continued to do occasional work for Currier & Ives and for Endicott, was an accomplished painter, and an early champion of watercolor.
