评论: Grandson of landscape painter Thomas Smith of Derby, and son of John Raphael Smith, mezzotint engraver. After moving to Boston in 1809, he established himself in Brooklyn (NY), opening a drawing academy about 1814; among his pupils were Eliab Metcalf, Anthony Derose, Thomas Seir Cummings, and Frederick S. Agate (see entries). He ran a similar school during the 1830s in Philadelphia, where Emanuel Leutze (see entry) and James De Veaux were his students. Smith also wrote several instruction books on drawing. His son, John Rowson Smith (see entry), was also an artist.
