评论: One of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists. He worked for the WPA-FAP as teacher and in the Easel Painting Division, 1936-41. A friend of Roberta Matta, he began to experiment with automatism in the early 1940s, and by the middle of the decade his canvases were dominated by biomorphic shapes set into fields of luminous, shifting areas of color. He was active in Provincetown, MA, 1946-50. Positions: founder, Subjects of the Artist School, 1948 (which became The Club," a meeting place for many NY abstractionists); painting teacher, Brooklyn Mus. Art School and NYU, 1949-52; teacher, People's Art Center, MoMA, 1950-52; assoc. prof. of art (painting), Hunter College, 1952-62.
