评论: Clay studied law and was admitted to the Philadelphia Bar about 1825, but he soon abandoned law for art and achieved considerable notoriety in Philadelphia for his biting caricatures. He left Philadelphia for NYC in 1837 and shortly after went to Europe for further art study, but his eyesight failed and he was obliged to give up his artistic career. In his last years he held a minor public office in Delaware.
