评论: A member of a wealthy English Quaker family, she married her teacher James Sharples (see entry/she was his third wife, the first two having died) about 1787 after which she worked closely with him, often making copies of his popular cabinet sized pastel portraits and also executing her own portraits. The Sharples came to America in 1793, traveling as itinerant artists through New England towns with their children before settling in Philadelphia, where Ellen herself was soon swamped with commissions. Among her subjects were George Washington, Martha Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Lafayette. In about 1797 the family moved to NYC, remaining there until 1801 when they returned to England. They came back to America in 1801 but returned permanently to England after James's death in February 1811. Ellen Shaples also worked in watercolor and was an expert fancy needleworker. The Sharples had two children, James, Jr., and Rolinda, both of whom became professional artists. Mrs. Sharples survived all of her children and left a substantial estate to the Bristol Fine Arts Academy, which she had founded several years earlier with a gift of 2,000 pounds.
