评论: While studying in London 1800-03, he became a friend to Washington Allston and like him became ambitious to paint history pictures. White returned to the U.S. and painted portraits in Charleston and Boston (1804), but finding little patronage, he decided to study law. He began practicing in Charleston in 1808 but continued to paint, specializing in scenes from American history. Among his major works was The Unfurling of the United States Flag in Mexico" (1834), one of many White paintings destroyed when the capital at Columbia, SC, was burned during the Civil War. White's most well-known work "General Marion Inviting a British Officer to Share His Meal," was replicated many times by the artist (a replica, along with three other Revolutionary scenes by White, now hangs at the Capitol in Wash., DC). He also wrote essays and a number of plays which were performed in Charleston and elsewhere.
