评论: Studied law and served in the ill-fated Rebellion of 1848. Escaped to the United States in 1851, where he became a topographer with one of the Pacific Railroad Surveys in 1852 and again in 1855. He also served with the U.S. Coast Survey in California and was stationed at Fort Tejon and Cape St. Lucas. While he was in California, he made important contributions to the study of Western birds and several new species were named for him. He was U.S. Consul at Manzanillo, Mexico from 1861-64, and afterwards returned permanently to Hungary. In his native country he became keeper of the ethnographical division of the National Museum in Budapest, a position he held until his death. He published two books on his American experiences, illustrated with his own sketches: Levelei Ejszakamerik·ból (Pest, 1858) and Utaz·s Kalifornia dÈli RÈszeiben (Pest, 1860).
