After gaining early attention for his work shown at the Harmon Foundation exhibitions, Allen rose to become a leading portrait photographer in Harlem, gaining commissions from the black elite who wanted sophisticated portraits in keeping with the image of the New Negro." Among his sitters were the poet Langston Hughes and the actor Paul Robeson. Allen's work was published in black journals such as Opportunity, The Messenger, and The Crisis.
