评论: The first African-American primitive painter to achieve widespread critical recognition, during the 1930s-40s. After serving in WWI and losing much of the use of his right arm, Pippin began making burnt-wood panels, taking up oils in the late 1920s. In the 1930s his work came to the attention of local Brandywine artists Christian Brinton and N.C. Wyeth who in turn introduced the work to the president of the Chester County Art Association. A solo exhibition at the Association's gallery in 1937 led to a showing of his work at MoMA in 1938. This led to numerous other exhibitions and the patronage of Phila. collector Albert Barnes (see entry). Pippin's subject matter included images of African-American life, historical, military, and biblical themes, and still lifes. Although he worked in a primitive style, his treatment of subject matter (as in his "John Brown" series) was often complex and psychologically and emotionally moving.
