评论: Realist painter. Known for his intimate interior scenes, landscapes, and portraits (including ones of artist Larry Rivers and poet John Ashbery). Painted on Monhegan Island (Me.) and was a longtime summer resident of Spruce Head Island, Me. As a young man Porter studied art history with Bernard Berenson, and later, during the 1950s, wrote wrote art reviews and a book on Thomas Eakins (1959). Awards: Longview Found. Award for criticism in The Nation, 1959. Teaching: adj. prof. art, Southampton Col., Long Island Univ.; instr., Queens Col., NY, 1969; prof. & artist-in-residence, Amherst Col., 1969-70. Positions: ed. assoc., Art News, 1951-58; art critic, The Nation, 1959; also contribruted articles to Art in Am., Art & Lit., and others. Author: Thomas Eakins (Braziller, 1959).
