评论: Sharples was an accomplished pastel portraitist who worked in Bath (1781), Bristol (1783 and 1785), Liverpool and London before coming to America in 1793 with his third wife, Ellen Wallace (see Ellen Wallace Sharples), their two children, James, Jr., and Rolinda, as well as a son, Felix, from Sharples' second marriage. On arriving in America, the Sharples traveled through New England selling relatively inexpensive pastel portraits before settling in Philadelphia. In that city James Sharples, with the help of his wife, made cabinet-sized pastel portraits, many of them in profile, of the city's leading citizens, including one of George Washington (c.1796-97). Four years later the family moved to NYC, where they were equally successful. It is believed that James also traveled through the South with his son, Felix. In 1801 the family returned to England and settled in Bath. In 1806 the two sons returned to America as professional artists, followed by the rest of the family in 1809. After his death in 1811 all of the family except Felix returned to England.
