评论: A second generation Hudson River School painter, specializing in scenes of the White Mountains. During the 1860s-70s, his intimate, small landscapes were very popular. In 1860 he married the sister of Samuel Colman (see entry), landscape painter. Shattuck painted during the summers in upstate New York and in New England, often in the White Mountains, NH; and was one of the first artists to paint on Monhegan Island. Many of his paintings are intimate barnyard scenes with cattle and sheep on his farm in Granby. He was also the inventor of a popular stretcher-frame which he patented in 1883, with improvements patented in 1885 and 1887. Unfortunately, a serious illness forced him to stop painting around 1885. In addition to his inventions, he turned to making violins. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of NAD.
