评论: Landscape painter and one of the first artists to record topographical views of American scenery for reproduction and widespread distribution as engravings. Shaw was an established painter of portraits, flowers, still life, landscapes, and cattle scenes before coming to America in 1817 and settling in Philadelphia. In 1819-20, Shaw traveled along the eastern seaboard and through the South, making sketches and taking subscriptions for his series, Picturesque Views of American Scenery, which were engraved by John Hill (see entry) and published in Philadelphia in 1819-20. Shaw was active in the Philadelphia art community, helping to found several organizations. He continued to exhibit until 1853 when he was stricken with paralysis. Shaw was also an inventor, and between 1817-43 he patented numerous improvements for firearms which later brought him financial awards from the American and Russian governments. Author: A New and Original Drawing Book (1816); Picturesque Views of American Scenery (2d ed., 1820, at NYHS); United States Directory for the Use of Travelers and Merchants (1822).
