评论: Position: asst. professor, professor of art, director, Tulane Univ., Newcomb College; pres., board of admin., Delgado Mus. Came to New Orleans to teach at Tulane under his brother, William Woodward (see entry). He and William were two of the most influential figures in the New Orleans art world in the 19th century. Ellsworth became Newcomb's first professor of art and introduced the school's successful art pottery program as well as the expansion of the art program into embroidery, metalwork and china painting. He remained active as an artist, even in retirement and helped form many art organizations. He was frequently honored for his contribution to the arts and in 1934 President Roosevelt appointed him to the directorship of the Gulf States Public Works of Art Project. His special talent was watercolor painting and in 1936 the Fine Arts Cl. established a prize in his name. Husband of Mary Belle J. Woodward (see entry).
