评论: From 1916-on, he was the most important documenter of Harlem life. His rich body of work includes studio and outdoor portraits of individuals, families, and community groups; funeral portraits; and scenes of everyday activities in Harlem, such as parades, couples strolling, women having their hair done, and children learning to dance. Van Der Zee also photographed prominent members of the Harlem community such as the singer Mamie Smith and heavyweight boxing champions Jack Johnson and Harry Wills. He was the official photographer for Marcus Garvey, the leader of the Back to African Movement" during the 1920s. Also appears as Derzee, James Van.
