Russian art: a tidal wave in April [2010年04月12日]

Between 2005 and 2008 the number of Russian artists generating 7-figure USD sums at auctions dramatically increased as wealthy collectors exercised a new appetite for a body of work that was relatively cheap compared with the stratospheric prices being fetched by European art. In price terms, the primary beneficiary of this new focus on Russian art during the last decade was 19th century Russian art.

The TOP 10 artists [2008年03月13日]

Every year Artprice compiles a ranking of artists based on the total revenue generated by public sales of each artist’s work, with Pablo Picasso invariably taking the number one position on the market podium. Not so in 2007: after nearly 10 years, the champion of modern art has been dethroned by the guru of Pop art, Andy Warhol. Second in 2006, Warhol became the global market leader in 2007.More than just one name replacing another, this ‘event’ reflects a veritable sea-change in the auction world. While in the 1990s the very pinnacle of the art market belonged to the impressionists, particularly Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet, and then, after 2000, to the moderns with Pablo Picasso and Gustave Klimt, today, and possibly for some time to come, the market has hoisted contemporary art to the summit of the pyramid.

Russians at the first Paris School [2008年02月25日]

At the start of the 20th century, Paris was a veritable artistic capital and its momentum attracted artists from all over Europe and beyond. Art history tends to group these artists together in what is known as the First Paris School. Between 1900 and 1920 the group included a number of Russians living in the Montparnasse district, an area that was a hive of creative activity.

Top 10 artists [2007年03月13日]

Each artist makes their own, large or small, contribution to the total market. And ranking them by auction turnover gives a good indication of market conditions, preferences and trends. Every year Artprice ranks artists by this criterion.

TOP 10 ARTISTS [2006年02月05日]

The Top 10 artists grossed USD 576 million in 2005, compared to USD 393 million in 2003, a figure that represents 13.6% of the total art auction market. Unusually, a contemporary artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and an old master, Canaletto, were among the top sellers. The top three names however are unchanged…

Performance of Artprice’s standardised art market place [2005年08月01日]

By 31 July 2005, just five months after its launch, Artprice’s standardised marketplace had hosted a total of 26,701 works of art offered for sale. Their value, excluding a very large number of major pieces offered by sellers at undisclosed prices, totalled EUR 521,754,069.

The Top 10 Artists by turnover [2005年07月25日]

The first half of 2005 proved very eventful for the art market. After several months of high bidding (251 works breached the USD 1 million mark) and a rise in global Fine Art sales turnover of more than 5%, there has been a major change in Artprice’s Top 10 ranking of artists by revenue.

5,000 works of art permanently on offer on the new standardised marketplace [2005年04月06日]

After only two months since its launch, Artprice’s new marketplace for artwork continues to boom. In March, Artprice’s Classified Ads section counted 450,000 visitors. At the beginning of April 2005, over 5,000 works by almost 4,000 artists were up for sale every day on this marketplace! By way of comparison, Art Basel and the FIAC each exhibit 1,500 artists.

Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985): works on paper [2004年01月18日]

Thanks to his massive output, Marc Chagall has more works sold at auction than any artist except Pablo Picasso. The most developed segment remains his works on paper representing almost 95% of the lots sold.

How do the art market heavyweights measure up? [2003年06月15日]

The world’s top ten artists by turnover (see rankings) generated USD506 million at auction in 2002. With only 1.7% of total transaction volumes they represent 20% of the art market.

Marc Chagall [2003年03月17日]

Marc Chagall was one of the most prolofic artists of the 20th Century. Prices are still under those recorded in 1990 but started rising 3 years ago. The major 2003 retrospectives are very likely to boost the market.
