评论: (His name also appears as Koellner or Kollner). Lithographer & engraver of landscape & historical scenes in watercolors and pen & ink. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1839 or 1840. He first worked for the lithographic firm of Philip Haas (see entry) in Washington, DC, but by the fall of 1840 he was in Philadelphia and pursuing portrait painting. When this proved financially difficult, he began working on military prints for Huddy & Duval's (see entry) U.S. Military Magazine. He also made some city views which were published by Frederick Kuhl (see entry) in 1842. In 1845 he traveled through western Virginia, and between 1848-52 he traveled widely throughout the U.S., making watercolor views of American scenes which were lithographed and published by Goupil, Vibert & Co. (of New York and Paris) as Views of American Cities, fifty-four in all. Köllner was active at least until the 1870s. Note: Wright states a birth date of 1813, at Düsseldorf, Germany, and a death date of 1888, while Reps cites 1906 as the year of death; Groce & Wallace states a birth date of 1813, in Düsseldorf, Germany.
