评论: Nephew of William Coleman, an auctioneer and gallery owner in Buffalo. Returned from study in Paris in 1862 to serve in the Civil War, but went back to Europe in 1866 with William Morris Hunt and Elihu Vedder (see entries). After spending time in Paris, Brittany, and Rome, Coleman eventually settled permanently in Capri. During his early career he focused primarily on portraiture and figural works, later he became known for his architectural subjects (such as Bronze Horses of San Marco, Venice," WMAA) and landscapes (in particular, views of Mt. Vesuvius). Despite his expatriate status, he still kept in contact with Buffalo society, receiving commissions for his Capri scenes and for decorative panels as well, including a series of large still lifes painted for the home of Agnes Ethel Tracy in 1879-80.
