评论: After completing his apprenticeship at Pendletons', Bufford moved to NYC and opened his own shop; he also drew for George Endicott and Nathaniel Currier. One of his major achievements was his transferring to stone the designs of A.J. Davis and others for the seminal Rural Residences (1837). Returned to Boston in 1840 and helped his brother-in-law, Benjamin W. Thayer, set up the firm of B.W. Thayer & Co. (see entry), acting as that firm's general manager and chief draftsman. From 1845 until his death he headed his own firm under various names ( J.H. Bufford & Co., 1845-50; J.H. Bufford, 1851-64; J.H. Bufford & Sons, 1865-66; J.H. Bufford, 1867; J.H. Bufford, 1869 until after his death, continuing with various names through 1910). Gave up the crayon in 1851 and began to employ European artists and taking on American apprentices (including Joseph Foxcroft Cole, Joseph E. Baker, and Winslow Homer). Bufford's firm produced town & city views, portraits, show cards, sheet music, & advertisements. He also became extremely successful as a publisher of prints, developing a line of drawing room prints, many of which were chomolithographs after paintings. After his death, Bufford's two sons Frank Gale Bufford (1837-1921) and John Henry Bufford, Jr. (1841-1893) continued with the business.
