This painting is from a series of large paintings based upon dolls that Werfel had found in the house where she grew up.She liked their Rubenesque fleshy figures and used them to begin to recreate the intersections of figures in old master figure paintings such as Tintoretto, Titian and Pozzo. At a certain point in the process, Werfel turned the painting so as to abstract the figures and create an all over rhythm. The identity of figures gets subsumed by the energy of the paint marks.
Oil on canvas - Unframed.
