This drawing is a detailed study for a print or a tapestry series. Several drawings are known from this series, all representing scenes from the life of Alexander, executed in a horizontal format, usually, as in the present drawing, on joined sheets of paper. Three such drawings are in the Museum of Stockholm (inv.nos.706,712,716), two were with Seiferheld Gallery in New York in 1968, and seven with Spencer and Samuel Co. in New York in 1991.
